| The Poets Tale Ref: 1269 My father read out a tribute to my father in law at his funeral, six months down the line he was diagnosed with having pancreatic cancer and passed over to the light three weeks later.
My father was my rock and it was such a shock to suddenly be faced with losing him. We were offered a place in a hospice for him but he had begged me not to put him there, he wanted to die at home. The last week of his life my brother and I were blessed enough to spend the time looking after him.
Even though I was a qualified nurse I had always been slightly nervous of being with someone who was dead or being there when someone died - it had always made me feel uneasy.
I went through the tears and the sadness as most people do when they hear they are going to lose someone so dear to them and like most people wondered how I would cope without him being around.
The final day came and my brother and I were taking it in turns to sit with my father. He was now in a coma and his breathing was becoming very slow. I walked over to the window which looked out over a field at the back, although my father was still breathing slowly I could see him walking up the field with two men either side of him... they were clothed in a similar dress as the two men whom had come to fetch my father in law. He turned and waved at me and smiled. I turned to look at my dad and was amazed to see he was still breathing, I went up to him kissed him softly on the cheek and said through my tears "it's time to go dad". I turned and walked out of the room to go and fetch a glass of water, when I walked back in he was gone.
This moment still brings tears to my eyes today, but they are tears of sadness mixed with blessings as I had been allowed to see his departure. He was the family poet before I took over and it felt right to say goodbye with a poem at his funeral so I wrote 'The Family Poet'
This experience although painful was a great learning experience for me. I had seen my father walk away smiling. I knew the body lying in front of me was just an empty shell and that he was with the angels.
There are still times when I miss his physical body but he returns to me frequently during meditations and healings and sometimes even joins me in the car.
